Carolyn Smith was born in Sheffield, and trained at Sheffield and Leeds Colleges of Art where she studied Fine Art and Art History, specialising in sculpture. Her early training as a sculptor has been the most important influence on her artistic interpretation of the world.
Carolyn is drawn to the sculptural qualities of the local landscape, and is particularly fascinated by trees, which she views as wonderful sculptural objects in their own right. Her intricately detailed drawings are completed in pen and ink and coloured pencil.
In 2011 Carolyn was Artist in Residence at Castle Howard Arboretum. Many of her works are inspired by the magnificent trees to be found there.
Carolyn's art work has been influenced by a diversity of interests. Her fascination with travelling, studies of ancient history and mythology, and her concern with social and environmental issues. Carolyn's work is essentially about conveying ideas which stem from these interests. The role of the artist, as she sees it, is to present a personal vision of the world. By the act of creating this vision, the artist hopes to reveal a different perspective and to enrich the viewers perspective as well as her own
