Artist Statement:
My passion is painting in watercolour plein air, although I do return to the studio to add the finishing touches. The joy of being outside, soaking up the atmosphere helps me to add this into my painting. I never forget the places that I have visited to paint. Sitting in a lonely spot looking at a beautiful landscape, sheltering under an olive tree for shade for hours on end or painting in a busy bustling city surrounded by people, they all give me a wonderful warm feeling. I am at my happiest in any of these situations.
I moved to Italy many years ago, selling my home in the UK and buying in the beautiful hilltop town of Cortona in Tuscany. What a beautiful place to follow my passion! There is never a shortage of places to paint. I have visited all the little towns near Cortona, the surrounding countryside and I have travelled to Venice on a number of occasions and the beautiful cities of Verona and Florence to paint.
At least once a year I am lucky enough to travel to other parts of Europe and beyond to paint. My real love is Essaouira in Morocco. The colour, the light, the people and the atmosphere draw me back year after year.
I now have a small pad back in the UK in the small but beautiful town of Helmsley in North Yorkshire where I spend the winter. Painting plein air in North Yorkshire in the winter is not so easy! I do tend to enjoy the warmth of my studio!
