After graduating with First class honours in 1974 I spent 32 years teaching Art in a variety of schools in the north of England. Having recently retired from my post as Head of the Art department at Lancaster Royal Grammar School I am now a full-time painter. I exhibit in several galleries throughout the U.K. and have had work selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. I have also exhibited on numerous occasions at the prestigious Lake Artists Exhibition at Grasmere.
My paintings are mainly about the landscape and I particularly admire the “painterly” qualities to be found in the work of Turner, Monet and Pissarro. As well as being about places and experiences my paintings are about the paint itself. The material is as important as the subject and I like to work in acrylics on canvas or board. I enjoy the quick-drying properties of the medium which allows me to build up rich and intriguing layers and surfaces whist still allowing me to retain freshness and vibrancy in the images. My paintings are investigations into colour, light and space. I try to establish a strong visual presence which enables the spectator to embark on an exciting visual journey.
